Now here’s a bit of a dodgy discovery…

May 27, 2009 By: fotdmike Category: Computers Internet & Stuff, Oddities

For reasons totally irrelevant to the point of this post (so I won’t go into them) I decided to create a Twitter account for myself.

Well, ok, I will go into the reasons…

All to do with my recent posts about Madeleine McCann. The initial two articles I’d written about the subject seemingly attracted a fair bit of interest, with a few people claiming they’d be interested in keeping track of my progress. So I thought it might be a good idea to have a Twitter account so that, if they wished, they could “follow me” thereby and thus be notified on the (rare) occasions when I may add something new to my writings about the McCann affair. Seemed like a good idea at least.

Now, I’m not a particular fan of Twitter. My reaction to it is a bit like my reaction to social networking sites… tried ‘em, don’t like ‘em, ditched ‘em. About the only one I’ve retained (if it can be called a social networking site) is the photo-sharing site Flickr (which is really good, incidentally). As for the rest. Pah! All a waste of time.

However, a couple of the communities I associate with use Twitter, as do one or two of my personal contacts, and it began to dawn on me that maybe this relative newcomer to the scene is a bit different.
So initially I set up a Twitter account with the nick “tawnews” for use on my… er… “alternative news”-related sites and stuff. Just to keep a few folk informed but, more importantly, enabling me to keep abreast of what some of my contacts were doing. All well and good. No problems.

Back to the present time then. So, finally deciding to set up a second “personal” Twitter account as it were, what do I find when I try to do it? I can’t! Cos my “nick’s” already in use!

Some toerag has already set up an account there using the nick “fotdmike”! Ok, I know there’s no copyright on nicknames… but I’m fairly widely known by that particular nick around the circles in which I move and, it has to be said, its not an “obvious” one. Not one I’d have thought that would occur to someone to use just off the top of their head sorta thing.

So, a little bit irritating, but not overly concerning. Not straight away at least.
But then I did a little bit of digging, and discovered that this mysterious “fotdmike” on Twitter has (with just one exception) followers that are identical to some of my own contacts. And that is worrying! For it suggests that someone at some point has tried to pretend they’re me!
Bloody cheek! (Bit daft as well, cos no-one in their right mind would really want to be me.)

Anyway, cutting a long story short, I haven’t a clue who this other “fotdmike” character on Twitter is. It certainly ain’t me, that’s for sure. So if any of my contacts are following them or whatever I’d… er… block them or something.

And just for the record, I now have two Twitter accounts… one under “tawnews“, and the second (and newest) under “fotdmike1“. And they’re definitely both me.

And if anyone’s got any doubts about any site or ‘net tool they come across that appears to be mine but may not be there are various ways of checking back with me personally, the best method probably being to use one of the webmail forms to be found either on my Flickr account or on my main site at Tilting at Windmills (on which domain this blog’s hosted incidentally).

And incidentally, should anyone manage to track this mysterious (and extremely suspect) second “fotdmike” down, see if he knows what “fotd” actually stands for! That’ll be a good test for the little bugger… find out if he’s done his homework properly or not. Heh heh.

The Madeleine McCann case… and yet another update!

May 22, 2009 By: fotdmike Category: Computers Internet & Stuff

I have to confess I’m getting a little bit bored with this seeming endless succession of updates!

Anyway…

Following on from my last however many posts, having discovered that the coupla articles I’d uploaded re the Madeleine McCann case had caused the bandwidth to be exceeded at my online doc archive (that’s a first!), and feeling somewhat abashed by the whole business (after all, a self-confessed computer geek like me shouldn’t be having such problems), I temporarily relocated the offending pages.

Not an ideal solution cos half the links didn’t work (the internal ones that is) and I didn’t have the time to change them all.

Pause for reflection then.

Best bet, thinks I, is to host them somewhere where there’s not likely to be bandwidth or access issues and, cos I’m a big fan of WordPress (in both the .com and .org flavours), where better than a WordPress blog. (Yep, another one to add to my seemingly mountainous collection!)

So that’s where those first two articles are now, and theoretically all the links should work ok… given that I spent ages laboriously going through them all, plus reformatting the article and heaven knows what else. (However, if anyone comes across any links that don’t work you can let me know cos there’s an onsite contact form as well!)

And, if/when I post any more stuff about the McCann case, that’s where it’ll be from now on. And hopefully that’s where it’ll stay!

The Madeleine McCann case… yet another update!

May 21, 2009 By: fotdmike Category: Censorship, Computers Internet & Stuff, Politics, Press Bias

Following on from my last post, in the most recent article I’d published re this matter I’d made a jesting remark about being in danger of exceeding my bandwidth due to the number of visitors.

Er… no longer is that a jest. That’s exactly what’s happened. Wow!

Consequently, and just for the time being, the two articles have been mirrored elsewhere… the first one is here, and the second (and most recent) here. Only snag is, whilst they’re at their temporary home the links cross-referencing the articles won’t work… but all the external links should still be fine.

And if anyone wants to contact me about either of the articles during this temporary relocation period, use this form.

Should be back to normal come the beginning of next month. Hopefully!

The Madeleine McCann case… an update

May 20, 2009 By: fotdmike Category: Conspiracies, Politics, Press Bias

Important Update 21.05.09: See this post

Following my recent coupla posts on the Madeleine McCann case (the little girl that “disappeared” in Portugal back in ’07), I was quite gratified by the positive responses I received to my first article that detailed my initial foray into the affair.

And boy, what an eye-opener that was! Far, far more to it that I’d thought.

I could have just left it there, but I’m afraid I was “hooked”. Just had to do a bit more thinking about it, and a bit more digging. Plus, quite a few of those aforementioned positive responses indicated to me that some people might just be a tad interested in what else I had to say about it.

Well folks, here it is! The second instalment, and almost equally as long as the first. But don’t anyone hold their breathe waiting for the third cos the plan of action I’ve now set myself looks like it might be quite a long drawn-out one.

A word of warning though… if you haven’t read the first then I’d suggest you do so before reading the second. ;)

More about Madeleine…

May 13, 2009 By: fotdmike Category: Conspiracies, Politics, Press Bias

Following on from my immediately preceding post…

Having watched that video I’d determined to do a bit more reading up on the Madeleine McCann case cos I was woefully ignorant of the details.

Well, not long into that endeavour I began to realise the whole thing was far too involved and serpentine to acquire a comprehensive overview in anything like a couple of days. I also realised, given the profusion of material that appears to be available, that before I’d reached the end of it all I’d run the very real risk of being sucked in to one or the other of the various theories that seem to be bouncing around without having paused for some critical and analytical thought on my own part.

So I decided it’d be quite a good idea to knock out a few notes of my own, listing my “first impressions” sort of thing. It’d also help to provide me with some sort of plan to work to should I decide (as seems increasingly likely) that I wanted to dig even deeper into the morass. And it was in the back of my mind to post those notes here, for the benefit of anyone who happens to chance by.

Well, I’ve done ‘em!

Thing is though, I found myself rambling on a bit and ended up with something a bit too long really for a normal blog post. So I’ve bunged it in my online doc archive here for anyone that’s interested.
